1958 Saffa Exhibition

In 1958, the rights enjoyed by men and women in Switzerland still showed a particularly unequal balance. At that time, none of the cantons that made up the country recognised women's suffrage, and only a few cities did so at the municipal level. Despite numerous demands from different groups since the end of the 19th century, it was not until 1959 that the first cantons recognised women's equality in voting rights, and it was not until 1990 that universal suffrage for women was achieved throughout Switzerland, after the government of the Confederation was forced to impose it on the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.
