Angoori Bagh Housing

This article is part of the [Sí] , a personal project curated by Marta López García where she wills to shed light on a twice silenced reality. The goal remains to recover and spread pieces of architecture displaced to the periphery; although this time focused on the work of female architects. In 1973 the Punjab government appointed Yasmeen Lari to design a social housing scheme which was part of an ambitious plan to provide with 6000 houses to medium and low-income families. Angoori Bagh Housing was the first phase of the plan and the only one to be built. Lari saw this commission as an opportunity to prove that good quality housing could be delivered through good design, cheat materials and local workforce. En 1973 Yasmeen Lari recibe el encargo del gobierno de Punjab para realizar un proyecto de vivienda social, el cual formaba parte de un ambicioso plan para alojar a 6000 familias de media y baja renta. El proyecto de Angoori Bagh fue la primera fase del plan y la única en llevarse a cabo. Para Lari este encargo le brindaba la oportunidad de demonstrar que, por medio de un buen diseño, el uso de materiales baratos y mano de obra local se puede construir vivienda de calidad a bajo coste. The brief was formulated between the future occupants and the architect. Inspired by the organic morphology of Karachi and Lahore, Lari’s proposal gave response to the site constraints such as the climate, the lack of skilled labour and the low budget. The project is for 787 dwellings arranged in blocks of 2 and 3-storeys which where grouped in clusters forming narrow pedestrian streets and public spaces.
