Bates House

This house was commissioned by the farmer Robert Bates and it was designed when Alison and Peter Smithson starter to show an increasing interest for Le Corbusier's work. Therefore, Bates House adopts some of the strategies created at Villa Savoye, although the Smithsons take transform them into their personal ideas enhancing the structuralism and landscape features of the project. The house rises above ground creating a courtyard. This is delimited by a circular elevation that separates it from the rest of the orchard planted in the existing terrain. The ground floor has the parking, the staircase and the machine rooms while all domestic activities are organized on the upper floor through a simple organization in bands. La casa se eleva sobre el suelo creando un patio delimitado por un elevación circular que lo separa del resto de la huerta sembrada en la parcela existente. La planta baja alberga el parking, la caja de escaleras y las salas de máquinas mientras que todas las actividades domésticas se organizan en la planta superior a través de una sencilla organización en bandas.
