About Cádiz Central Market

This was one of the first buildings erected in Spain to organise and accommodate what until then had been a travelling market for perishable products. It was contemporary with the La Encarnación market in Seville and the Puerto Real market and predated those built in Madrid, Barcelona and Santander from 1840 onwards. It is a transitional building between the open square and what would later become covered market squares. At first it was difficult to understand with a solid interior that faithfully copied elements of the perimeter construction. An ascent to the roofs cleared up all the doubts when it came to separating the wheat from the chaff. The contemplation of the four internal doors, only visible from the roof, provided dates and author in a building turned in on itself. There were two clearly differentiated architectures. A neoclassical one, completed in 1838, by Juan Daura. Another barrack-like and mimetic one, by Juan Talavera, dated 1929. The second one drowned out the first and prevented the monument from being seen.
