City in the Space

During the 1960s and 1970s, Ricardo Bofill made a research about collective housing that would ended up in a series of built projects that connected radicalism and Mediterranean tradition. These projects have been defined by the own architect as utopian and unsuccessful and there were based in an original project named City in the Space proposed in Madrid. Durante los años 60 y 70 Ricardo Bofill realizó una investigación sobre vivienda colectiva que terminaría en una serie de proyectos construidos que aunarían radicalidad y tradición mediterránea. Estos proyectos, que han sido definidos por el propio arquitecto como utópicos y fracasados, se basan en su propuesta de Ciudad en el Espacio para Madrid. The Theory of City in the Space attempted to create a different society and legality based on the creation of new communities and that they would not be predetermined. The project was contextualized in a post-Le Corbusier moment where architects started to claim that the city did not have a specific form. Therefore, City in the Space was designed as geometrical process that attempted to conquer the space through several geometric and rigid rules that gave as a result an infinite building framed by courtyards and arcades. La teoría de la Ciudad en el Espacio aspiraba a crear otro tipo de sociedad y legalidad basado en la creación de nuevas comunidades asentadas en la demanda y que no fueran predeterminadas. El proyecto estaba contextualizado en un momento post-Le Corbusier donde se comenzaba a asumir que la ciudad no tenía forma. Por tanto se construía como un proceso geométrico que trataba de conquistar el espacio a través de unas leyes geométricas muy claras y rígidas dando como resultado un edificio infinito enmarcado en patios y arcadas. The project was finally unbuilt. However, Ricardo Bofill could finish other projects following this theory, being the Walden 7 the closest to his original ideas.
