Climat de France

Climat de France, one of the last buildings completed before Algiers' independence from France, shows many of the contradictions of late colonial architecture. The city commissioned Fernand Pouillon in the early 1950s to design a new housing project to relocate Muslims who came from agricultural areas and settled in slums around the city. The project was at the same time evidence of how the colonial government attempted to position itself as a figure of authoritarianism and generosity to Algerian citizens. The project has a great formal presence because of its location and geometry. It is located at the foot of the hill, about two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, offering an imposing presence in the city's landscape. The complex has several buildings with different scales. A large central rectangular volume stands out from the rest. With similar proportions of a Roman forum, the building has a large central square surrounded by a covered double-height corridor from which the houses rest. The windows of the set, of different sizes, create a mosaic that can be easily referenced in Muslim architecture. El conjunto tiene una gran presencia formal, tanto por la localización como por su propia geometría. Se sitúa en la falda de la colina, a unos dos kilómetros del mar mediterráneo ofreciendo una imponente presencia en el paisaje de la ciudad.
