About Colegio de las Teresianas

It is a public school, consisting of primary and secondary school for girls between 5 and 17 years old, run by the Theresian Institute, with a total capacity of 800 pupils. The programme is very broad; a core of lecture halls for theoretical instruction and one for practical instruction (already built) have been planned; another is foreseen (projected) for services with living quarters for the internal pupils, library, dining rooms, directorate, chapel, etc. Thanks to the favourable climate and because of the cost issue, the festival hall was replaced by an open-air theatre. At present, the core of the lecture halls is in use together with an old, already existing building, which also houses some rooms for the service operations. The building site is located on a very steep hillside, which has a magnificent view of the sea and yet is practically in the centre of the city. The overall layout was designed in such a way that the classrooms overlap vertically, so that the roof of each one also serves as a terrace for the next higher one. These terraces allow for outdoor activities and their sloping connection favours insulation. The classes are connected by horizontal corridors underneath each other; a zigzag staircase connects them upwards.
