Concepción Arenal Collective Housing

Formed by a fabric of filled-in blocks and crossed by a relatively narrow road, the Pópulo neighbourhood, where this intervention is located, corresponds to the first settlement of the city of Cádiz facing the sea. The project has been developed following the guidelines of the Plan for the Interior Reform of the Old Town, whose regulations correct the existing alignments, increasing the width of Concepción Arenal Street in the section facing the eighteenth-century building of the Royal Prison, now the courthouse. Formado por un tejido de manzana colmatada y atravesado por un viario relativamente estrecho, el barrio del Pópulo, donde se sitúa esta intervención, corresponde al primer asentamiento de la ciudad de Cádiz frente al mar. El proyecto se ha desarrollado siguiendo las directrices del Plan de Reforma Interior del Casco Antiguo, cuya normativa corrige las alineaciones existentes, aumentando la anchura de la calle Concepción Arenal en el tramo que se enfrenta al edificio dieciochesco de la Cárcel Real, sede actual de los juzgados. The programme, consisting of a total of 39 subsidised housing units with commercial premises, has been distributed in two phases due to strategic needs. The first of these phases was carried out, with 23 homes and a commercial premises, on the corner of Botica and Concepción Arenal streets. The remaining 16 homes occupy the opposite site of the adjoining block, within a volume that extends the front of the building facing the street, completing the definition of the new alignment. Both phases are visible from the street as four blocks of the same height, separated from each other by the courtyards open to the façade and by the interruption of Botica Street. El programa, consistente en un total de 39 viviendas en régimen de protección oficial con locales comerciales, se ha distribuido en dos fases debido a necesidades estratégicas.
