Dawson’s Heights Estate

This article is part of the [Sí] , a personal project curated by Marta López García where she wills to shed light on a twice silenced reality. The goal remains to recover and spread pieces of architecture displaced to the periphery; although this time focused on the work of female architects. Imagine living in a 2-storey dwelling on the 10th floor of a unique building overlooking central London to the north and the open landscape to the south and having a large open space at ground floor which includes gardens and a playground to share with a community. Those are some of the things that Dawson’s Heights can offer. This uncanny and monumental residential development was designed by 26-year-old Kate Macintosh while working for the Borough of Southwark’s Architecture Department. Her proposal was chosen among their colleagues’ due to its interesting and imaginative approach to the site. Instead of proposing the typical rectangular slab block, Kate´s idea was to create a short of ziggurat that allowed the buildings to sit organically on the top of the hill. With the purpose of making the most of the location she imagined this romantic brick mountain as a vantage point which can be seen from far away and breaks the monotony of the adjacent urban landscape.
