Edificio Altolar

Placed on the city's southern hills, Altolar opens itself to the views of the valley of Caracas. The complex, of approximately forty-five apartment units, expresses with its three circulation levels and five floors horizontally disposed an experience never before released in Contemporary Venezuelan Architecture. Its longitudinal sitting is set on a cured lot, parallel to the inclined topography. Sembrado en las colinas del sur de la ciudad, este edificio se abre a las vistas del valle de Caracas. Este conjunto, de aproximadamente cuarenta y cinco apartamentos, expresa a lo largo de de sus tres niveles de circulación y sus cinco plantas dispuestas horizontalmente una experiencia inédita en la Arquitectura Contemporánea Venezolana. Su implantación, dispuesta longitudinalmente a lo largo de un lote sinuoso, es paralela a la inclinada topografía. The solution is based on a vast preexisting contention wall. This constitutes the stone basement and the formal guideline of the architectural conception: a walled volumetry that, when being horizontally arranged in the manner of train wagons, follows the topographical configuration and wraps around the internal space, silent and tropical. La solución se fundamenta en el respeto a un extenso muro de contención preexistente. El mismo constituye el basamento de piedra y la determinante formal de la concepción arquitectónica: una volumetría amurallada que, al disponerse horizontalmente a la manera de los vagones de un tren, sigue las ondulaciones de la topografía y envuelve su espacio interno, silencioso y tropicalizaado. Architecture is disposed here as a frontier that bounds the city's space, keeping the building's theme inside its inner precinct: the suspended circulation corridors as aerial bridges. Altolar's realm retakes the idea of a shadowy patio, framed in the dark with a skin that protects the architectural mass.
