Federal Reserve Bank of New York

This building was intended to be an addition to the adjacent, existing palazzo-like home of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Located off Nassau Street, the site was small, the program large and, although they were not bound by New York Zoning Laws, the Bank wished to be good citizens. One of the greatest public amenities the Bank could offer would be to open up the entire site as a public plaza. It was decided to raise the building to the full height of the adjacent bank. This would allow a clear view of the existing, handsome building and raise the office workers out of congestion, giving them views of the surrounding harbor and improving security. The new building’s design included a first floor with a recreational center for employees and a bridge to connect to the cafeteria of the existing building to form the central social element for both buildings.
