Haltestelle Hietzing

The ‘Imperial and Royal Court Pavilion’ in Hietzing, completed in 1899, is one of the most striking features of the Wiener Stadtbahn, Vienna's metropolitan railway. Otto Wagner, one of the most important pioneers of 20th-century modern architecture, was commissioned to create the artistic design for this new urban public transport system. The idea of building a court pavilion also came from him. The importance of the imperial station was primarily symbolic; it was intended to help modern architecture reach its zenith. The fact that Emperor Franz Joseph only used the pavilion twice was secondary. More important was the public impact of this small structure with its sensational new use of forms and its sumptuous interiors. Wagner repeatedly attempted to convince the emperor and his court of the extraordinary quality of his project using impressive presentation drawings. He skilfully exploited the imperial glamour of the Court Pavilion to secure his position as an architect and gain support for modern architecture.
