IFCCA Prize Competition for the Design of Cities | Hudson Yards

The inauguration of Hudson Yards, the new private urban development in New York City, and its radical opposition to enhance the existing city and to create public space, allowed us to rethink the urban possibilities that this large site had. Instead of making a criticism of the urban project or any of its buildings, we decide to bring back the project of Peter Eisenman that won a competition launched in 1999 in the same urban area. En lugar de realizar una crítica al proyecto urbano o alguno de sus edificios, decidimos recuperar el proyecto de Peter Eisenman, ganador de un concurso que se realizo en 1999, en esta misma zona urbana. One of the paradoxes of our time is that the new nature of the computer and its speed of computation can reinstate “the natural” in opposition to the alienated mechanisms of the machine age, which opposed nature. For example, the folding and warping of surfaces made possible by the computer appear to us as natural conditions. At the same time, computation can restore the unpredictable and unforeseeable to human intentionality and thus to architecture. This paradox occurs because the digital computational processes, which are essentially or/off (+/-), can be speeded up to introduce such a level of complexity that what was striated space, such as the urban grid, can be made to appear smooth. Una de las paradojas de nuestro tiempo es que los nuevos reglas del diseño asistido por ordenador y su velocidad de computación pueden reinstaurar lo “natural” en contraposición de los mecanismos alienados de la era de la máquina, los cuales se oponen a la naturaleza.
