In 1956, a limited competition was announced for the new construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which had been severely damaged during the war. The urban plan foresaw a significant change in comparison with the situation prior to the destruction: the church island, which was previously surrounded by streets, was to be connected to the block of buildings on Kantstrasse/Joachimstaler Strasse/Kurfürstendamm, so that the actual building site was now to the west of the church, which previously faced east. The remains of the nave were demolished. Participants in the competition were free to incorporate the ruins of the tower into the new building, leave them isolated or propose their demolition. Egon Eiermann's design envisages the demolition of the old tower and shows a cubic hall church with a separate baptismal chapel, set on a platform and flanked by two independent towers. As a variant, a group formed by several round structures was designed. The church and the chapel were to be located in hexagonal fields. The jury decided to let three competitors compete again in a second stage. Once again, the use of the tower ruins was optional.
