Kigali - The capital city of Rwanda and very much the country's nerve centre. One of the most important and best-developed memorial centres commemorating the Rwandan genocide is located here too. Within the city itself, two sites deserve particular attention from a dark tourism perspective. On a hillside north of the city centre, the country's principal memorial centre to the Rwandan genocide is located – for many tourists, this is the only such site visited; as such it is very much geared towards foreign visitors and in that sense alone has to be regarded the No. 1 dark tourism spot in Rwanda : - Kigali Genocide Memorial Another site deserving its own separate entry here is the memorial site at the former Camp Kigali army barracks, where during the earliest hours of the genocide unfolding, ten Belgian UN peacekeepers were murdered: - Camp Kigali Belgian Memorial Further places within Kigali that are associated with the genocide and the civil war include the Parliament building, the Amohoro stadium complex, the Hotel des Mille Collines and a few more: The Parliament is of interest because the scars from shelling during the war were deliberately left on the outer facade to serve as a kind of reminder in its own right.
