Kinaxixe Market

The Kinaxixe Market (1950-1958), demolished in 2008, was a reference of the modern movement in Luanda and the first work designed by Vasco Vieira da Costa (1911-1982) after his internship in Paris at the studio of Le Corbusier. The project was commissioned by the Governor-General of Angola, Captain José Agapito da Silva Carvalho, and was developed between 1950 and 1952 by Vasco Vieira da Costa, as part of his duties as municipal architect, in the upper part of the city: next to the National Museum of Natural History of Angola (1956) and the Miramar cinema (1964), where in the early 1950s the “Cuca Building” (demolished in 2011), by architect Luís Taquelim da Silva, was built. El Mercado de Kinaxixe (1950-1958), demolido en 2008, fue una referencia del movimiento moderno en Luanda y la primera obra diseñada por Vasco Vieira da Costa (1911-1982) tras sus prácticas en París en el estudio de Le Corbusier. El proyecto fue encargado por el Gobernador General de Angola, el capitán José Agapito da Silva Carvalho, y fue desarrollado entre 1950 y 1952 por Vasco Vieira da Costa, en el marco de sus funciones como arquitecto municipal, en la parte alta de la ciudad: junto al Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Angola (1956) y el cine Miramar (1964), donde a principios de los años 50 se construyó el “Edificio Cuca” (demolido en 2011), del arquitecto Luís Taquelim da Silva. It was also in the 1950s that Vasco Vieira da Costa drew up the Plan for the Bay of Luanda, designing a line of buildings that limited the city's growth and simultaneously opened it up to the bay by creating an extensive gallery on the ground floor that marks the base and creates a transitional space and a comfortable route. The Kinaxixe Market will be one of the buildings designed in the 1950s that will transform the city of Luanda, organising the surrounding space with its simple geometry and reinventing the place.
