La Petite Cathédrale

La Petite Cathédrale is a key project in the architecture of Ricardo Bofill because it is the moment where his formal interests are transformed from a pure and un-symbolic architecture (Walden 7, Red Wall, etc.) into a ornamental architecture and a closer relation with the own history of architecture (Gothic architecture in this case). The most interesting part of the project is seeing the intense relation between these two perspective in order to understand the later architecture of Ricardo Bofill.15 La Petite Cathédrale es un proyecto clave en la arquitectura de Ricardo Bofill ya que es el momento donde sus intereses formales se transforman desde una composición más pura y alejada de simbolismos claros (Walden 7, Muralla Roja, etc.) hacia una arquitectura más ornamentada y una relación más cercana con la propia historia de la arquitectura (arquitectura gótica en este caso). Lo interesante de este proyecto es ver esa intensa relación entre estos dos puntos de vista y para entender la arquitectura posterior del propio Bofill. This residential complex was conceived as a covered street about 300 meters long and 70 meters high, with width varying from 20 to 60 meters. Este complejo residencial fue proyectado como una calle cubierta de 300 metros de largo por 70 de alto y con un ancho variable de 20 a 60 metros. This project demonstrates how geometric methodology can be used in a different way to produce objects of significance and diverse use. El proyecto demuestra como la metodología geométrica puede ser usada de distinta forma para llegar a producir objetos con un significado y un uso diverso. The layout and design of the edifice is accomplished through the use of spaces evoking the Gothic cathedrals: entry, nave, transept, chapters and cloisters, which develop along the length of a rectilinear axis.
