Occasionally, however, a faint glow comes from the surface of the lake, as if under these waters something rests only at intervals. It conveys serenity to me so late, when my hope for sleep has faded as yesterday the sunlight did behind the bedrock of Les Jumelles. The days are so short at this time of year that the sun is unable to pierce its peaks. Those of us who live down here, on the shores of the lake, have the feeling that hours of daylight are snatched away from us every day.
