It is obviously far from being featureless, but it has an increased physical proximity to geometrical abstraction than many other environments. The consciousness abstraction of space dilated when the Public Land Survey System, colloquially called the Jeffersonian Grid, was a mapping system used in 1785 after the U.S. acquired vast land post-Revolutionary War. This grid system was used to map lands rapidly and, by standardizing space, extended the human condition since we could now plan, sell, and trade lands without truly being there. Previous methods of land surveying would rely on natural barriers and landmarks. Currently, land could be described using numbers or terms that had no real relation to the ground. And so, the Midwestern man-made environment that was birthed through the Jeffersonian grid does not grip the earth but rather floats on the surface of it.
