About Museum of Fallen Soldiers

lost places : Museum of Fallen Soldiers ( formerly - darkometer rating : 6 -) A small museum in central Stepanakert about the war in Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s. It was quite idiosyncratic, but endearing and touching. Since Azerbaijan conquered Stepanakert in its military offensive of September 2023, it’s extremely unlikely that this museum could still there. Since it presented everything from an Armenian/Artsakh perspective, I cannot imagine that the new masters in town would keep any of it. So it, too, will have to be regarded as a lost place. The text below was adapted from the original chapter I had written after my visit in 2010. That’s now 100% history. ----------------------------- > More background info > What there was to see > Location > Access and costs > Time required > Combinations with other dark destinations > Combinations with non-dark destinations > Photos More background info: for some general info about the war in the 1990s see under Nagorno-Karabakh . The creation of this museum had come out of the efforts of an association of the parents/mothers of fighters who lost their lives in the 1990s conflict. On the sign by the entrance it was referred to as the "Museum of Perished Soldiers of the NKR" (= Nagorno-Karabakh Republic). The name used in the title of this entry and elsewhere on this website is retained, however, simply because the museum is better known under that label abroad (e.g. it's the name used in the Lonely Planet guide to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan). It was those mothers who, shortly after the ceasefire was in place in 1994, first started getting themselves organized and putting collected relics together, which later formed the basis of the museum.
