Oakland Museum

The Oakland Museum, although it was the first project by the firm of Kevin Roche, John Dinkeloo, and Associates, remains relatively unknown outside the United States. After the untimely death of Eero Saarinen in 1961 and the need to continue ongoing projects, the firm gained recognition from critics and historians, especially following the construction of the Ford Foundation. It also solidified its commercial reputation through numerous commissions for office and corporate headquarters for major American companies. However, perhaps due to the firm's later projects, which were less radical in their approach and sought more social and public aspects in architecture over the last three decades, Roche and Dinkeloo's projects have lost international prominence. Visiting the Oakland Museum feels like exploring two projects in one: a terraced park that offers views of the city from different heights as it rises, and a network of underground galleries and passageways with both horizontal and vertical light sources that help soften the darkness of the interiors.
