Palau Finestres

This is the reconversion of the Finestres palace as the working headquarters of the Barcelona Merchants' Association. Until the 1950s, the various palaces on Carrer Montcada, one of the most notable streets in the Gothic city, were restored by reusing old elements from demolished historic buildings. The beauty of the Finestres palace lies in the fact that it was, on the contrary, completely despoiled: the bare surfaces of some walls and the remains of a tower remain. The pre-existing construction determines the new floors of the upper levels, which seek the most suitable layout for the work, freeing the ground floor from all activity and transforming it into a place, identical to the other courtyards on Carrer Montcada. The entrance to the building is via a mobile ramp. The difficult confrontation with the restoration commission gave rise to this second proposal, which insists on the theme of the link between the old and the new construction through a series of openwork walls that cover the old walls and the new façades, attempting to superimpose a new temporal stratification on the work.
