Pavilion for Residencia de Señoritas

The Residencia de Señoritas was created in 1915 to promote women's access to higher education. As part of the reformist and liberal project defined by the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, the new women's group at the Residencia de Estudiantes, led by María de Maeztu, established the channels for the educational and cultural promotion of women and their integration into modern life. In its aspirations and achievements it followed the same guidelines established for the male group. In its development, the collaboration with the International Institute in Spain, an American entity with similar objectives that had been established in Madrid at the beginning of the 20th century, was essential. La Residencia de Señoritas fue creada en 1915 para fomentar el acceso de la mujer a los estudios superiores. Inscrita en el proyecto reformista y liberal definido por la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, el nuevo grupo femenino de la Residencia de Estudiantes, dirigido por María de Maeztu, estableció los cauces para la promoción educativa y cultural de la mujer y su integración en la vida moderna. En sus aspiraciones y realizaciones seguía las mismas pautas establecidas para el grupo masculino. En su desarrollo resultó esencial la colaboración con el Instituto Internacional en España, una entidad estadounidense con similares objetivos que se había asentado en Madrid a principios del siglo XX. Victoria Kent, Matilde Huici or Josefina Carabias among others were part as residents. María Goyri, María Zambrano and Maruja Mallo, in addition to the American teachers linked to the International Institute taught here. Many speakers, such as Gabriela Mistral, Victoria Ocampo or Clara Campoamor, took part in the activities organized by the Institute, and topics related to women were frequently discussed.
