Fernão Lopes Simões de Carvalho, the author of the Luanda Master Plan (1962) confirms that the modern architecture practiced in the colonies shapes the Corbusian ideals in a process of “tropicalization” of the “International Style.” It is also within this frame that the Brazilian architecture, which knows from foreign publications, interests him. His learning at André Wogenscky's office, where he studied from 1956 to 1959 after finishing the course at EBAL, fits into a self-training strategy, the French architect was responsible for Le Corbusier's executive projects. Simões de Carvalho wants to “apprehend”, not a language, but “how to build”. There is a strong pragmatic sense in his performance at the head of the Luanda Urbanization Office, which he founded, giving a new constructive dynamic to the city and clearing up various technical problems.
