Remodeling Plaza España

The refurbishment of Plaza España (The Squire of Spain) is one of the most unknown projects of Santiago Calatrava and, however, it summarizes two of the concepts that the architect has been developing through his projects: the construction of a space through a ribs structure, and the mechanical movements for the entries. La remodelación de la Plaza de España es uno de los proyectos menos conocidos de Santiago Calatrava y, sin embargo, sintetiza de un modo preciso y condensado dos de las ideas recurrentes en sus obras: La construcción del espacio a través de una estructura basada en un sistema costillar, y el uso de movimientos mecánicos en los accesos. The starting point of this project was two urban facts: On the one hand, the square was traditionally used as a market and for local events; on the other hand, the city hall needed to build a great space for exhibitions and public ceremonies. Therefore, it was decided to bury the building in order to maintain the original use of the plaza. One of the main features of the project is their access and its integration within the urban form: two large doors are located at the other end of the square. The closer entry to the Santa Maria Church has a fixed access, framed by a font. On the other side, a below ground entry is opened as a secondary access using a stainless steel frame. Este proyecto partía de dos premisas iniciales. Por un lado, la plaza se usaba tradicionalmente como mercado y para eventos locales. Por otro, el ayuntamiento necesitaba construir un gran lugar para actos y exposiciones. Se decidió entonces soterrar el espacio expositivo para permitir que la plaza mantuviese su uso original. Una de las principales características del proyecto es los accesos desde la plaza y la integración de los mismos en el trazado urbano: dos grandes puertas se sitúan en los dos extremos de la plaza.
