About Revolution Square

In 1960 the Slovenian architect Edvard Ravnikar won the competition for the architectural and urban design concept of the Revolution Square in Ljubljana, today's Republic Square. Even before he had won this competition, Edvard Ravnikar had repeatedly complained that Ljubljana lacked the character of a national capital. He attributed this lack to the fact that the city lacked classicist architecture and neighborhoods. In the 1920s, when Jože Plečnik returned from Prague, Ljubljana was still a small provincial town with only 40,000 inhabitants. Through the construction of several landmarks as well as some important urbanistic measures, Jože Plečnik managed to change the provincial character of the city and to integrate some metropolitan features. With the planned Revolution Square Ljubljana should gain a representative character and a modern city center. When the competition for the Revolution Square was published in 1960, Ljubljana was the capital of the Republic of Slovenia and already had 130,000 inhabitants. In the meantime, had the necessary scientific, cultural and political institutions were built. According to the competition guidelines, a symbolic space for the representation of the Republic with a monumental square and a monument to the revolution was to be created on the available terrain. Already in the 1950s, Edvard Ravnikar had won an urban design competition for the design of the center of Ljubljana, dealing with the transformation of the former garden of the nunnery into a central urban space. These studies included a large space for mass events, administrative buildings, political buildings, the seat of state institutions and government offices, and a deserved people's pantheon. En 1960, el arquitecto esloveno Edvard Ravnikar ganó el concurso para el concepto arquitectónico y urbanístico de la Plaza de la Revolución de Liubliana, la actual Plaza de la República.
