San Antonio de las Huertas Church

With the collaboration of Felix Candela y Fernando López Carmona, the San Antonio de las Huertas Church, located in Colonia Tlxapana, has a basilica plan with one nave of three cross vaults, similar to the Stock Exchange project. It was built in the same site as the demolished Franciscan convent San Antonio de las Huertas, and the church is the result of the cross between two hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces, whose intersections define its four supports, as a cross vault. The deliberated lighting effect achieved to separate the vaults among them and from the lateral walls is outstanding. Between the vaults, the architects built narrow segments of parabolic vaults that follow the outside edge of the main vaults and leave an open space to create glass openings to let indirect light into the church. Each of the vaults has an almost square plan and a height between 7.5 and 10 meters in the crown of the perimeter arches where the in which the free edge provides a sensation of lightness. The separations between vaults are covered with higher cylindrical arches that are connected to the vaults with a light triangular structure that, at the same time, holds the amber tone glass openings. Con la colaboración de Félix Candela y Fernando López Carmona, la Iglesia de San Antonio de las Huertas, ubicada en la colonia Tlxapana, está basada en una planta basilical de una sola nave con tres bóvedas de arista semejantes a la de la Bolsa de Valores. Construida en los terrenos que ocupó el convento franciscano de San Antonio de las Huertas, la iglesia es el resultado de un cruce entre dos mantos con forma de paraboloide hiperbólicos cuyas intersecciones definen la dirección de los cuatro apoyos, como en una bóveda ojival.
