Santo António Da Polana Church

The new Church of Polana is presented as a reference in the urban landscape, like one of the boldest models of brazilian modern architecture. Thus, an isolated object is perched on the ground supported only on 16 points, forming a pyramidal structure with reinforced concrete folds, like an inverted flower levitating. Its interior corresponds to a single circular-shaped space, characterized by the imposing presence of concrete, which is mitigated however by entries of multicolured bright light, a light that slides over the folds from the top of the dome to ground. The central space has a capacity for 600 people, which are surrounded by seven altars and a baptismal font, occupying constant intervals of the 16 peripheral areas with enries of light. The simplicity of interior spaces is accentuated by the minimal choice of materials: beyond the concrete, plastered and painted white and glass panels, some openings to allow ventilation and ceramic pavement. The conceptual unity of this work goes beyond its architectural dimension, extending itself to furniture design and figurative elements, since fulfilling the modern aim of integrating arts. La nueva Iglesia de Polana se presenta como un elemento de referencia en el paisaje urbano, a imagen y semejanza de los modelos más atrevidos de la arquitectura moderna en Brasil. Así, un objeto aislado se alza sobre el terreno apoyado tan sólo sobre 16 apoyos, formando una estructura piramidal con pliegues de hormigón armado, como una flor invertida levitando. Su interior se corresponde con un espacio único de planta circular, caracterizado por la presencia imponente del hormigón, que se atenúa sin embargo por las entradas de luz multicolor, una luz que resbala sobre los pliegues desde la parte superior del cimborrio hasta el contacto con el suelo.
