Šerefudin White Mosque

In panoramic views of the historic guild town Visoko, near Sarajevo, the Šerefudin White Mosque dominates less by its scale than by its imposing presence. Designed by Zlatko Ugljen in 1969, the project is an early epitome of his signature regionalism, an idiosyncratic, in situ elaboration of the natural and cultural contexts inspired by Croatian-born architect and theorists Juraj Neidhardt's concern for regional, “unwritten laws” of design. The building is situated in Visoko's densely built town center, its prayer hall and minaret sunken below street level and behind an elongated wing containing offices and a library. The sacred space is accessed by a ramp curving from the courtyard gate to the front porch, which accommodates ritual washing, providing a humble interlude for visitors before they enter the immersive prayer hall. A sculpturalconcrete shell pierced by carefully placed skylights defines the sparsely furnished interior and contributes greatly to its subtle spatial intensity. The mosque's unconventional dome, the formal centerpiece of the project, is structured by a sophisticated geometric operation: the sectioning of mutually penetrating truncated pyramids.
