Shushtar New Town

This article is part of Never Modern, a series curated by Hidden Architecture where we explore the conditions of several urban projects from 1950s onwards that, starting from the hypothesis of the Modern Movement, they surpassed its orthodoxy to adapt the urban features to local conditions. The economic growth and rapid modernization that had Iran during the 70's provoked a migration from rural world to cities of a population looking for better job opportunities. In order to establish affordable housing, local and national governments created new masterplans in existing cities that could take in these migrants. One of these examples is the Shushtar New Town where new housing for more than 25.000 people was programmed. El rápido crecimiento económico y la modernización que sufrió Irán durante los años 70 provocaron unos grandes movimientos migratorios del mundo rural a las ciudades en unos ciudadanos que buscaban mejores oportunidades laborales y una mayor calidad de vida. Para conseguir un sistema de vivienda asequible a tales migraciones, las autoridades locales y nacionales decidieron crear una serie de nuevos desarrollos urbanos en varias ciudades existentes; tal fue el caso de la Nueva Ciudad de Shushtar donde se desarrolló un masterplan para acoger a 25,000 nuevos habitantes. The project started in 1975 with the decision of extending the Shushtar (a city located 750 kilometers south from Tehran) with the construction of a satellite city for the new workers of the agro-industrial area of Karoun, a sugar producer factory in the same region.
