Tomb of Shah Rukn-i-’Alam

The Shaik Rukn-i-Alam mausoleum is located in an ancient fort called Gil’a Kuhna in Multan, Pakistan. Multan is one of the oldest cities in Punjab. The mausoleum sits on the highest point of the fort overlooking the city. It is centrally located in a 6300 square meters compound and its surrounded by a park and cemetery. The Holy shrine is an octagon in plan with a diameter of 15.5. m. The building consists of a large lower octagon and a smaller upper octagon surmounted by a large central dome. The slanted walls of the lower octagon measure 14 meters high including the parapet. They are surrounded by protruding domed turrets a teach point. The upper octagon lacks the turrets but a small dome surmounts each of the octagonal points surrounding the central dome. All domes are adorned by spires with apples. A rectangular vestibule housing the main entrance protrudes from the south side of the building. This is a later addition. On the east wall of the vestibule is the arched main entrance.
